PRODUCT DATA FOR LD-7 ASPHALT EMULSION

DESCRIPTION

Blacklidge Emulsions' LD-7 is a specialized anionic asphalt emulsion.  LD-7 is specially formulated to “lock down” and secure aggregate on chip seal and other pavement surfaces.  LD-7 emulsion has also been successfully used in many other types of road building applications where a durable, high performing seal is desired.  For best results, the product is used hot (140°F to 180°F), and cures within minutes to form a continuous coating of asphalt over the surface.  The multiple advantages LD-7 include:  improved aggregate retention, reduced binder aging, a long- lasting black surface, improved contrast for stripping, and improved solvent resistance, where necessary.  LD-7 applied on chip seals or other roads yields a longer lasting hot mix appearance at a fraction of the cost.

USES

Used primarily as a “lock down” material to secure aggregate on chip seal roadways.

LIMITATIONS

As with any emulsion, do not allow the material to freeze or boil because of aggressive heating.  Freezing or boiling of LD-7 will break the emulsion.  LD-7 IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH CATIONIC EMULSIONS (CRS, CMS, CSS, CQS, etc.).  All equipment should be thoroughly cleaned if cationic emulsion was previously present.  It is highly recommended for the product to be applied when hot (140°F to 180°F).  If the product is to be stored for an extended period of time, the material should be periodically agitated and/or gently circulated.  Do not apply LD-7 if rain is expected.  Please contact your Blacklidge Emulsions representative prior to first use for detailed storage and handling procedures.

APPLICATION

Conventional emulsion distributors are suitable for LD-7 application.  The pavement surface should be cleaned and dry prior to application.  If LD-7 is being applied over a chip seal or other emulsion treatment, it is highly recommended that the LD-7 be applied only after the emulsion treatment is fully cured.  The application rate will be dependent on the condition of the surface, but the general range is often between 0.08 to 0.12 gallons per square yard.  It is recommended that LD-7 be used when pavement temperatures are at least 60 °F and rising, although successful application has been experienced at lower surface temperatures.  The desired application temperature is 160 °F to 180 °F for a normal sunny day.  During periods of cooler temperatures or shady conditions, it is recommended to apply LD-7 in the upper end of this range (170 °F to 180 °F), but in no situation should the temperature be allowed to exceed 180 °F.  It is highly recommended that LD-7 be heated to the application temperature in a gentle manner to avoid any localized boiling of the emulsion.

SKID WARNING

As with any fog seal product, a new layer of asphalt can reduce friction values on smooth pavements.  While this is typically not a problem on chip sealed and coarse roadways, we highly suggest evaluating the friction properties of the pavement before and after any fog seal application.  In the case where fog sealing is desired but friction values are expected to become an issue, sanding the surface during application of LD-7 can greatly improve skid resistance.  For other solutions or any questions, please contact your local Blacklidge Emulsions representative.
